If you cut an I-beam level\u2019s profile in half, it will look like the letter I.<\/p>\n<p>The horizontal elements of the \u201cI\u201d are known as flanges, while the vertical element is termed \u201cweb\u201d. The web resists shear forces, while the flanges resist most of the bending moment experienced by the beam.
